A pride festival is an annual event celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer social and self-acceptance, achievements, and legal rights. The events often serve as demonstrations for legal rights and seek to create community and honor the history of the movement. Most pride festivals occur annually, with many taking place in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. They have grown internationally since the first marches in 1970.
